It’s a fair question. You’re standing in your garage or basement looking at a mix of old furniture, random boxes, a broken appliance or two, and maybe some stuff you’re not even sure how to describe — and you want to know if we’re going to show up and say, “Sorry, we can’t touch that.”
So let’s clear it up. We get this question every single day at Flathead Junk Removal, and the honest answer is: we take a lot more than most people expect. But there are a few things we can’t haul, and those limits exist for good reasons — usually safety or the law.
Here’s the full breakdown from the guys who load the truck, so you know exactly what to expect before you book a pickup in Woodbridge, Manassas, Fairfax, or anywhere else in Northern Virginia.
What We Take — The Big List
Let’s start with the good news. The vast majority of items in your home, garage, yard, or office are things we can haul away without any issue. Here’s what we load onto our trucks on a daily basis:
Furniture
This is the number one thing we pick up across Northern Virginia. Couches, recliners, dining tables, chairs, dressers, bookshelves, desks, bed frames, entertainment centers, patio furniture — if it’s a piece of furniture, we take it. Doesn’t matter if it’s in perfect condition or falling apart. Doesn’t matter if it’s on the third floor or in a finished basement. We bring the muscle and the truck, and it’s gone.
A lot of homeowners in Centreville, Bristow, and Lake Ridge call us specifically because they can’t get bulky furniture to the curb for their county’s bulk trash pickup. Either the item is too heavy, they can’t get it through the door, or their pickup date is weeks away, and they need it gone now. That’s exactly the kind of job we handle.
Appliances
Refrigerators, ovens, ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves, window AC units, dehumidifiers, water heaters — all fair game. We haul old appliances out of the house and make sure they’re disposed of properly.
Appliances with refrigerants — like fridges, freezers, and air conditioners — require proper handling to recover the refrigerant before disposal. That’s regulated by the EPA, and it’s one of the reasons tossing an old fridge in a dumpster isn’t legal. When you hire us, we make sure all of that is handled correctly so you don’t have to worry about it.
Electronics and E-Waste
Old TVs (including the big heavy CRT ones from the early 2000s), computer monitors, desktop towers, printers, stereo equipment, old gaming consoles, and all the cables and accessories that come with them. E-waste is one of those categories where people let things pile up because they don’t know where to take them. We take them, and we make sure they get to proper e-waste recycling facilities.
Mattresses and Box Springs
We pick up mattresses every single day. King, queen, full, twin — all sizes. Mattresses are one of the most awkward items to get rid of on your own. They don’t fit in most vehicles, they’re heavy and floppy, and a lot of donation centers won’t accept them for hygiene reasons. We grab them right from the room they’re in and load them onto the truck. Easy.
Yard Waste and Outdoor Items
Branches, brush, leaves, old fencing, broken lawn mowers, grills that have seen better days, play structures the kids outgrew, old swing sets, garden sheds, and general yard debris. If it’s in your yard and you want it gone, chances are we can take it.
Construction and Renovation Debris
Drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, old cabinets, bathroom fixtures, carpet and padding, baseboards, and general demo debris. If you’re doing a renovation in your home — or your contractor just finished one and left a mess behind — we handle the cleanup. General Household Junk
This is the catch-all category, and it’s a big one. Boxes of old stuff from the attic. Bags of clothes you’re not donating. Kids’ toys, sports equipment, old luggage, broken lamps, picture frames, holiday decorations, books, magazines, and all the random clutter that accumulates over the years. If it’s taking up space and you want it gone, we load it up.
The Big Stuff
Hot tubs, sheds, above-ground pools, trampolines, old fencing, decking, and other large outdoor structures. These require disassembly and extra labor, but they’re absolutely something we handle. Most homeowners can’t tackle these on their own, and that’s perfectly fine — that’s what our crew is trained for.
What We Can’t Take — And Why
Now for the shorter list. There are certain items that junk removal companies in Virginia legally cannot haul, and others that pose serious safety risks to our crew or the public. None of these restrictions are about being difficult — they’re about keeping everyone safe and staying within the law.
Hazardous Chemicals and Materials
This is the biggest category of items we can’t take. It includes paint (especially oil-based), solvents, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids like brake fluid and transmission fluid, and any other chemical products with warning labels about toxicity or flammability.
Why can’t we take them? Because transporting hazardous materials requires specialized licensing, vehicles, and disposal facilities. Mixing chemicals in the back of a junk removal truck — even by accident — can create dangerous reactions. And disposing of them at a regular landfill or transfer station is illegal in Virginia.
Asbestos
If your home was built before 1980, there’s a chance that certain materials — floor tiles, insulation, pipe wrapping, popcorn ceilings — contain asbestos. Asbestos removal is heavily regulated and requires licensed abatement professionals with specialized equipment. We will not handle, disturb, or haul any material that’s known or suspected to contain asbestos. If you’re not sure whether something in your home has asbestos, get it tested before you start tearing things out. Your health depends on it.
Medical Waste
Needles, syringes, sharps containers, IV bags, biomedical waste, and any materials contaminated with bodily fluids. These require medical waste disposal services that are licensed to handle biohazards. If you’re cleaning out a home where someone received in-home medical care, check with your local health department or pharmacy about proper disposal options for sharps and medical supplies.
Propane Tanks
Full or partially full propane tanks — the kind you use for a gas grill — are pressurized and flammable. That makes them a serious safety hazard during transport. Most local propane retailers and hardware stores will accept old tanks for exchange or recycling. Some county hazardous waste programs accept them too, though policies vary.
Certain Types of Ammunition and Firearms
We can’t transport live ammunition, explosives, or firearms. If you’re clearing out a home and find these items, contact your local law enforcement for guidance on safe disposal or surrender.
The Gray Area — Items That Need a Conversation
Some items don’t fall neatly into “yes” or “no.” They’re things we can usually handle, but they might come with extra considerations, special pricing, or limitations depending on the situation.
Tires
We can take tires, but tire disposal comes with additional fees because landfills and transfer stations charge extra for them. If you’ve got a couple of tires from a vehicle swap, it’s usually not a big deal. If you’ve got a stack of 20 tires in your backyard, let us know ahead of time so we can quote it accurately.
Large Amounts of Concrete, Brick, or Stone
A few broken-up concrete pavers or a small pile of bricks? No problem. But concrete is extremely heavy, and a full truckload of it can exceed weight limits quickly. If you’ve got a large patio tear-out, a demolished retaining wall, or a big pile of masonry, call us first so we can assess the weight and give you an honest quote. Sometimes a dumpster rental is the better option for heavy materials in bulk — and we’ll tell you that straight up.
Pianos
Pianos are one of the trickiest items in junk removal. They’re incredibly heavy — an upright piano can weigh 400 to 800 pounds, and a grand piano can top 1,200 pounds. We can handle piano removal, but it’s a labor-intensive job that usually requires extra crew members and sometimes special equipment, especially if the piano is upstairs, in a basement, or in a tight space. Let us know about the piano when you schedule so we come prepared.
Dirt, Gravel, and Soil
Similar to concrete — small amounts are fine, but these materials are heavy. A cubic yard of soil weighs about 2,200 pounds. We can handle it, but the weight affects the load capacity and pricing, so it’s best to give us a heads-up.
Hot Tubs
Hot tubs aren’t really a gray area for us — we take them all the time. But they fall into this section because the process is more involved than most people expect. Hot tubs need to be drained and electrically disconnected before we can remove them, and the disassembly and haul-away is a bigger job than a standard pickup. How to Handle the Items We Can’t Take
Just because we can’t haul certain items doesn’t mean you’re stuck with them. Every county in Northern Virginia offers programs for the things that need specialized disposal.
Prince William County
The Prince William County Landfill on Balls Ford Road in Manassas accepts household hazardous waste by appointment. They take paint, chemicals, motor oil, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and more. You can schedule a drop-off through the county’s Solid Waste Division.
Fairfax County
Fairfax County runs the I-66 Transfer Station, which has a household hazardous waste facility that accepts drop-offs on specific days. They handle paint, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, and similar materials. Check their website for current hours and accepted items.
Loudoun County
Loudoun County operates a household hazardous waste collection program with scheduled events throughout the year, plus a permanent drop-off location. They accept chemicals, paint, automotive fluids, pesticides, and electronics.

How to Prepare Your Items for Pickup Day
Here’s something that surprises a lot of first-time customers: you don’t need to organize anything. Seriously. You don’t need to box things up, bag things, sort things, or carry anything outside. That’s our job.
All we need is access. If the items are in a room, we need to be able to walk in and carry things out. If they’re in a garage, make sure we can get to them. If there are items in multiple rooms or on different floors, just point us in the right direction during the walk-through and we’ll take care of the rest.
A clear path helps a lot. If there are narrow hallways, tight staircases, or cluttered corridors between the items and the truck, clearing some space ahead of time makes the job go faster. Faster jobs often mean lower costs for you.
And if you’ve got items you’re on the fence about, it’s fine to wait until we arrive to make the final call. We’ll do a walk-through with you before we start loading, and you can add or remove items from the list at that point. The price we quote you during the walk-through is the price you pay — no surprises.
